Liquid Penetrant can be highly sensitive when locating small cracks

Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) is one of the earliest forms of nondestructive testing.  PT uses a penetrating dye to find surface breaking discontinuities.  This procedure can be used on most type of metals as well as plastic, ceramics and glass.

The basis of liquid penetrant testing is capillary action.  This principle encompasses the fact that a liquid in contact with a solid surface will be drawn into a small surface opening due to the cohesive properties of liquids. Therefore, small or narrow surface breaking defects will draw dye penetrant into a discontinuity by capillary action.

Although the Liquid Penetrant Method is fairly simple to use, obtaining accurate results are highly dependent upon the technician.  VIP technicians are trained to pay particular attention to the little details in order to assure the highest quality penetrant test and inspection obtainable.

VIP technicians are trained and certified in accordance with our company’s written practice which meets the guidelines established in SNT-TC-1A.  SNT-TC-1A is an internationally recognized document for establishing a procedure for NDT personnel qualification and certification. Our technicians go through hundreds of hours of experience and training along with a formal examination before they are certified as a VIP NDT Technician.

VIP has two nationally certified ASNT Level III’s in the PT method.  Our Level III’s maintain our PT procedures and instruct Level I and II PT Courses.  These courses are available for our clients and VIP personnel.
