Magnetic particle inspection can find indications within painted surfaces as well as some subsurface indications

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) is a form of nondestructive testing that uses a magnetic particle medium and the induction of a magnetic field to locate a surface or slightly subsurface discontinuity.    Due to the principles of magnetic properties, MT can be used only on ferromagnetic parts and items.

 

MT testing is accomplished by introducing a magnetic field (magnetic flux lines) into a part.  The presence of a discontinuity transverse to the lines of force causes a phenomenon known as “flux leakage”.  This flux leakage attracts the magnetic particle medium to the leakage field, which produces a visible indication.

VIP technicians are trained and certified in accordance with our company’s written practice which meets the guidelines established in SNT-TC-1A.  SNT-TC-1A is an internationally recognized document for establishing a procedure for NDT personnel qualification and certification. Our technicians go through hundreds of hours of experience and training along with a formal examination before they are certified as a VIP NDT Technician.

 

Vital Inspection Professionals has two nationally certified ASNT Level III’s in the MT method.  Our Level III’s maintain our MT procedures and instruct Level I and II MT Courses. These courses are available for our clients and VIP personnel.

 

The purpose of magnetic particle testing is to ensure the integrity of the product being tested.  Any discontinuity that will affect the fit, form or function of an item will be deemed as a relevant indication. Therefore, the integrity of the inspection relies on the technician’s ability to interpret the inspection outcome with the relevant applicable codes and acceptance / rejectance criteria.
