Ultrasonic Testing (UT) is one of the most widely used methods in the nondestructive testing industry.  UT is a versatile inspection technique used to test a variety of both metal and non-metal products.

UT utilizes sound waves, much like that used in a depth finder, to determine the thickness of a material.  Ultrasonic Testing can also accurately locate and identify subsurface discontinuities as well as some surface indications.

Thickness Testing – Determines the thickness of a known material.  Thickness gauging requires that the test instrument be calibrated to a known test standard that has comparable characteristics in velocity of sound waves as well as geometrically similar to the item being examined.

Shear Wave – Flaw detection is accomplished by transmitting waves into the material at an angle closest to being perpendicular to suspected discontinuities in a material.  A discontinuity will reflect part of the incident sound wave, which is then received by the transducer causing an interpretable indication to be seen on the display screen (A-Scan).

Ultrasonic Inspection

VIP has many company certified Level I and Level II UT Technicians. Our technicians go through hundreds of hours of experience and training along with a formal examination before they are certified as a VIP NDT Technician.  We also have one nationally certified ASNT NDT Level III on staff.

State of the art equipment is vital for an accurate UT examination.  Vital Inspection Professionals maintains the most up to date instrumentation for thickness gauging and flaw detection as well as an Auto V system for accurate measurement of difficult cast iron materials. Furthermore, all of our equipment receives regularly scheduled calibrations to NIST standards.

VIP’s latest technology includes an equipment package for continuous B-scan with a remote controlled scanner/crawler.  With this equipment and a completely integrated software package, VIP can perform B-scan inspections on many types of rolls as well as tanks and pressure vessels.

In this highly specialized field of Ultrasonic Testing, it is imperative to have all the viable components (trained personnel and state of the art equipment) for a successful inspection.  With VIP you will have confidence that our inspection will have the highest level of accuracy.
